Mitchell & Webb and the Death of the Sketch Show
In lieu of a typical review, I used the recent revival by popular British comedy double act Mitchell & Webb of their old sketch show format to analyse how the industry has changed. The sketch show was one of the most popular vehicles for British Comedy for decades and the way the format seemed to die off with the rise of social media didn't appear to be a coincidence.
The Existential Nightmare of Mr Bean
Using theory I'd recently been working on about the intersection of drama and comedy, I decided to develop a deeper reading of the antics of British slapstick comedy staple Mr Bean. The video proved an instant hit, with people commenting on how it made them see Mr Bean in a different light, as well as insinuating it was a result of me overthinking it. Whether I'm correct or not is immaterial: I knew it would be a hit because it would get people talking, and I was right.
The Cautionary Tale of Alan Partridge
Alan Partridge was created as a satire of a wannabe presenter whose career prospects trended towards failure, and yet somehow he's still here three decades later. When digging in further, I discovered that the entire purpose of the character has been inverted over the course of those three decades.
